Preconception Checklist

Planning on getting pregnant?

Here are some tips to help optimize your pre-pregnancy wellbeing!

  • Folic Acid Supplement

  • For most women, a 400mcg folic acid supplement daily from pre-conception right till the end of pregnancy will suffice. Folic acid helps to prevent neural tube defects (i.e. problems in formation with the brain, spinal cord and spine). Higher doses are required in special circumstances for women who have had previous issues with NTD, women with Diabetes or on anti-epileptic medications. See your GP if this is the case.

  • Cut back on alcohol

  • Current guidelines state that during the pre-conception and first three months of pregnancy; stop drinking alcohol as this increases chances of miscarriage, premature birth and low birth weight.

  • We currently lack the evidence to tell us how much alcohol is safe; some claim 1-2 drinks per week (never more than 2 at a time) is safe.

  • Stop smoking & using drugs: these have been shown cause fetal abnormalities in some cases, low birth weight, premature labor and cot death.

  • Stay active.

  • Maintain a healthy weight: being at extremes of weights holds their own complications.

  • Manage Stress: an excessive amount of stress can impact your hormones and thus chances of getting pregnant

  • Contact us or your own doctor for medical assessments; blood tests , medication review (as not all medications are safe during pregnancy) and if you have underlying conditions such as high blood pressure, thyroid disease, diabetes, epilepsy.
